Eleven

A special mission

“You look tired,” Lilly said, massaging his shoulders.

“The fact that we are so close to the end is just –,” he sighed, “it’s just exhausting. Plus, Eduardo asked me to meet him in private today.”

“What for?” Lilly asked, frowning.

“I don’t know,” he said. “Maybe he finally knows who I am. But I guess if that were true, he would have already shot me dead. He wouldn’t have given me a chance to run away. Maybe he is just suspicious about something –.”

“I am worried about you,” she said.

“Don’t worry,” Alex said, smiling at her. “Everything will be okay. I will figure something out, don’t you worry. How is your work going?”

Lilly had been working as a maid for a while now. She was usually so busy that they barely had a chance to interact. She would come home and tell him things she had found some things out from maids and other servants about Eduardo. She would say it all proudly, too, like she was telling Alex something new and important. Alex never had the heart to tell her that all the ‘intelligence reports’ Lilly brought home were useless, considering that he already knew everything. But it made her feel like an undercover spy, and Alex enjoyed seeing her so happy and thrilled.

It helped that Lilly was intelligent and quick. Alex would never have managed to gather such intel working a position such as a servant. But even as a maid, her knowledge matched Alex’s, and at times he wondered about how good of an agent she would make if given the training for it.

“Look, I gotta go,” Alex said, standing up. “Eduardo is waiting. I will see you later, okay?”

He leaned down and kissed her, and she kissed him back passionately.

With one last wave, he headed out, his mind preoccupied with the same thoughts that have been bothering him all this time. By the time he reached Eduardo, he was having brunch in the tearoom. As Alex walked in, he stuffed a piece of toast in his face and put the newspaper down.

“Ah, Johnny,” he said. “How is everything going?”

“Just fine, Sir,” Alex said. “Them operations are all fine, and all yer orders are being followed.”

“Good,” Eduardo said. “Do you know, Johnny, I like keeping an eye on my men. I like knowing what they are up to when they aren’t over here. I like knowing what they do behind my back. And when I looked into you, I found something very interesting. You have been meeting up with someone lately, haven’t you?”

Alex’s heart sank, and he felt a sudden wave of nausea.

“Not sure what yer mean, Sir,” he said.

“You do, Johnny,” Eduardo said. “Of course, you do. You know exactly what I mean. I must say, I didn’t expect this from you. Out of all the people here, I didn’t think you would be the one to do something like this. Quite an achievement, I must say.”

“Sir, I really –,” Alex tried to say.

“You must have quite a lot of hidden talents to pull something off,” he said, leaning back into his chair.
